Learn how to make documentary style audio stories

If you want to learn how to craft intimate stories using sound, you’re in the right place.

If you're passionate about podcasting and audio storytelling, but don’t know where to start, you’re also in the right place.

If you just love listening to audio stories, you're in the right damn place.

Radio Story School or RSS is about:

1. Making audio - simple tips and tricks so you can learn to create your own powerful audio stories

2. Insights and breakdowns - behind the scenes look at how stories are made

3. The future of audio storytelling - how to make audio relevant in a dynamic and changing world

It's also a place for podcasters, radio makers and wannabe audio storytellers to fail and suck and embarrass themselves wildly (---> i.e. me).

Before you are able to be good at something and do something important, you must first suck at something and have no clue what you’re doing. That’s pretty obvious. And in order to suck at something and have no clue what you’re doing, you must embarrass yourself in some shape or form, often repeatedly. And most people try to avoid embarrassing themselves, namely because it sucks.

About me

I'm Zena Kells.

I created RSS because I love audio storytelling and the type of audio storytelling website I wanted didn't exist. So I created the website I wanted.

I'm an independent audio journalist living in Sydney. I’ve worked as a producer for ABC Local Radio. My audio work has aired on PRX Remix, ABC and WNIJ. I've also made radio dramas funded by UNICEF and AUSAID on the magical island of East Timor. I used to work in theatre but once I discovered the power of audio, there was no turning back.

I like working with audio because every time I do an interview or edit a new story I do something wrong and in the process, I learn something new. And that’s the beauty of audio storytelling - it’s easy to pick up but it takes a lifetime to perfect and find your own voice.  I'm still trying to find my voice. I hope I can help you find yours too.

My dream is to one day run a community radio station (can you hook me up?).
